Parts of the action in 2011 are a bit naff, like the bit where Chrollo is just "floating" whereas you actually feel the speed they're travelling at in 1999. 1999 just nailed Chrollo's design for this fight, it's like they lifted him directly from the manga. However there is a real sense of danger in his face in 2011, and you can see he's having And Gon doesn't seem to remember the character from the flashback, which contradicts with the manga. But overall, it's a very small change. 2 recap episodes early on, but the anime is phenomenal, no filler. 2011 anime is probably your best bet if you want to experience HxH to the fullest. Another difference is the scene in the manga where Gyro The 1999 anime adaptation all share the same look, tone and feel as the Yu Yu Hakusho anime adaptation as well the Pilot OVA episode of Hunter x Hunter that was made by Pierrot. The 1999 adaptation's art style and character design is clearly closer to how Togashi drawn it in the manga than in the 2011 adaptation.
