War of the Ring starts in Rivendell and ends with the destruction of the One Ring (or the corruption of the ring bearer, or military domination). Fellowship of the Ring starts with 5 hobbits in the Shire with the Ringwraiths closing in, and goes until the fellowship is dissolved. War of the Rings is also a very text heavy game. All of the cards are packed with tiny text and it takes time to read. But it has this really cool dice action mechanic that make means that sometimes the forces of evil, who should be crushing the free people, are instead looking for the One Ring very cool. Yeesh, it’s a tough call.
Of course, my storage solution for War of the Ring doesn't help keep the size of the mess down. I'm painting all the minis and don't want them rubbing up against each other, so I have the Free Player's pieces in my First Edition box (each mini in its own foam bed) and the Shadow Player's pieces in my Second Edition box (each in its own foam bed).
The thing with heavy games like War of the Ring is really if they will actually be played or not. There's a ton of competitive board games out there, so don't worry about a shortage but very few of them are played regularly. I'm sure War of the Ring is a great game. Time won't change that.
So I just played War of the Ring for the first time the other day, and I loved it! Although I didn't get time to finish it since we totally…
The anniversary edition adds significant time to set up and take down due to extra care taken with minis. Furthermore, telling apart units, specifically leaders vs elites on the free people team is really difficult. In fact I have gotten into trouble by thinking an army was stronger than it looks by making that mistake.
